We are often asked, “what training is best for someone interested in project management?” My first response is always “experience is the best training for project managers." However, a close second is formal and informal education, which can come in many forms. There is no “one size fits all” for project management training. It is dependent on a number of factors that may include industry, organization, experience and goals of the person receiving the training.
To respond to marketplace demands many colleges and universities offer degrees and certificates in Project Management both online and in a classroom setting. A few highlighted programs are provided.
The Project Management Institute (PMI) is an organization that offers standards, education, networking opportunities and certification in project management. On their website, PMI has a list of training resources.
There are also many private companies that offer training both online and in a classroom setting. Google away and you will find them or search the PMI website for Registered Education Providers (REP).
Let's also not forget the many books, publications and videos on project management.

Recently we audited “Fundamentals of Project Planning and Management,” a four-week massive open online course (MOOC) offered by the University of Virginia Darden School of Business through Coursera.
The instructor, Assistant Professor Yael Grushka-Cockayne, leads students through a well-organized journey that is excellent for both the person who wants to understand the basics of project management or as a high level refresher for seasoned veterans. In addition to the online course videos and course material, there are case studies, group discussions and resources for those who wish to delve further into the world of project management. Best yet, it is an amazing bargain, free for those who just wish to browse or $59* for those who wish to officially register and complete the required quizzes to earn a Coursera Verified Certificate.
The course will launch in Coursera’s on-demand format -- self-paced with suggested deadlines -- next month.
Whatever the path you select, learning and refining your knowledge will only help you be a better project manager.
